"So now you're gone, and I was wrong. I never knew what it was like, to be alone on a Valentine's Day..."
For me, these words were surprising when I first heard them leave the mouth of Chester Bennington. I’ve spent all of my life without an actual valentine and I’m okay with it. Also, the guys that I know could care less about this holiday. They find Valentine’s Day more of an obligation contrived by Hallmark than a holiday. “Shouldn’t I show you that I love you every day we spend together, not just this day?” my boyfriend asks me when I asked him about our plans for this weekend.
Although I find my boyfriend’s comment true, I believe it’s a girl thing to like Valentine’s Day. I’ve never met a girl that didn’t like holidays. I’m the one that considers a birthday a holiday because it’s a day you celebrate, which holidays are celebrations. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s his little sister’s birthday as well.
Although in the past, Valentine’s Day has always been just a joke between me and my friends. One year, I was in Washington D.C. during Valentine’s Day and I asked a friend back home to be my valentine at 11:59 pm. Now due to the time difference, it didn’t quite work out how I thought it would. Even still, we had a good laugh once I came back into town.
My boyfriend and I did, however, come to an agreement. He would plan a lunch for us, where I will plan dinner and anything else that I would like. I’m not a real nit-picky girl; all I wanted was a dinner and a movie, just like all of our other date nights. Not much of a girly-girl either, I want to go watch Friday the 13th, which I know that he would enjoy as well. Our past two date nights have been scary movies, The Unborn and The Uninvited, so let’s just keep up with the trend. Then afterwards, we’ll come back home, cuddle up with a big tub of ice cream, and watch Important Things with Demetri Martin. A girl couldn’t ask for anything more. Or at least I can’t :)

ReplyDeleteToo funny! My husband and I are going to watch Friday the Thirteenth--tonight, Friday, the thirteenth. This is our Valentine's Day "celebration", too.
Read my blog on the subject. It's eerily similar to yours.

I am the same way, kinda. I have been with my husband now for 6 years. (Married 3) In the begining he did sweet things for me, and I loved it, but I was completely and totally content with spending time together. I am not high maintenance, I don't think, but like I tell my husband... "It is the thought that counts". I can tell when he puts thought and effort into a gift, even if it costs only $25. I would much rather an inexpensive gift with thought, than expensive gift that he picked up because he felt he had to. :) Have a Happy Valentines Day!
ReplyDeleteI am not the girly girl type either. I hadn't had a Valentine's Day like in the movies. My boyfriend and I watch movies alot and cuddle all the time. He is not that big on V-Day. I learned not to be. So anyway he is going to change my spark plugs tomorrow. That's a good V-Day, because they need changing anyway. LOL! He also works on that day.
ReplyDeleteJolie, I agree that it is a girl's thing to like Valentine's Day. I feel lucky right now, because my boyfriend has actually been excited all week about Valentine's Day. I, too, think it's a good point that you can show someone you love them every day, but I think this day is just more special because you actually dedicate the entire day to showing them you love them.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you two have a nice day planned out together. Unfortunately, my boyfriend will be at work all day, but tonight, we will be at the 3 Doors Down concert! Lol. I couldn't ask for a better Valentine's Day!

What about me and my 3 Doors Down? lol. Yeah, it was awesome, like always. Hoobastank was awesome, too, but I missed Safety Suit. They were playing their last song when we got there. It was so much fun.
