"If I"

I spoke of him before in my Valentine's Day blog. Demetri Martin -- I mean, my favorite comedian who I find to be brilliant in more than one way. His punchlines can literally have me rolling on the floor laughing. Sometimes the jokes go over my head, but when I think about them later, when I’m at work or in class and I figure them out, I find myself laughing out loud to myself. I get crazy glares sometimes, but I don’t care.

Demetri Martin used to write a weeklong journal for slate.com. He wrote about his experience as a writer on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. While recently browsing through the articles on Slate.com, I found an article about Martin that links you to the diary.

I also wanted to share some of his brilliantness with you all. Here is a copy of his 224-word palindrome poem.

"Dammit I'm Mad"

Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
Ew, a spider… eh?
We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,
A Goddam level I lived at.
On mail let it in. I’m it.
Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!
A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.
Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:
“Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”
Evil is a deed as I live.
Dammit I’m mad.

  1. Being the un-intellectual guy I am, I haven't got the foggiest idea what that poem is really about. All I get from it is that he's trying to explain how far deep he is in of this "evil" or anger of his. Using methaphors to better describe it. Other than that, I have no clue. haha.. Enlighten us :)

  2. Jolie,

I have never heard of this comedian! I'll have to look into him a little more, because the poem seems...I don't know...sincere?

  3. I had never heard of Demetri Martin until I seen his show on Comedy Central the other day. You're right - his punch lines WILL make you roll on the groud from laughing so hard! I LOVED his show, and I'm definitely going to check out more of his stuff.
